A useful React hiring brief starts with the product work waiting to be done. Framework familiarity is necessary, but it does not tell you whether someone can navigate your domain, review a design or maintain a complex interface.

Describe the actual responsibility

Explain the application, the rendering framework and the balance of feature work, maintenance and architecture. Say whether the engineer will work within established patterns or help define them. Include accessibility, performance and testing responsibilities.

Be specific about independence. Someone implementing reviewed designs with available backend support faces a different assignment from a lead coordinating a new frontend across several teams.

Use a representative technical discussion

Choose a small workflow and ask how the candidate would manage data, local state and failure behavior. Discuss which state belongs in the URL and how the interface handles loading or stale data. Ask how they would verify keyboard interaction and form errors.

A focused code review can be more useful than an unrelated algorithm exercise. Look for clear reasoning, appropriate questions and the ability to explain tradeoffs without immediately introducing more libraries.

Evaluate integration skills

React work depends on API contracts, authentication and design decisions. Ask how the engineer handles an incomplete backend contract or a component that needs to serve several product areas. Good judgment includes knowing when to generalize and when a local implementation is clearer.

Review how they approach tests. The important question is whether the tests protect a meaningful user behavior, not whether every line has a matching assertion.

Prepare the first contribution

Provide setup instructions, coding conventions and a map of the component system. Assign a reviewer and choose a first task that exercises the normal delivery path. Make domain questions easy to ask.

Track onboarding friction. Missing environment access and slow review can make a capable engineer appear unproductive. Improving those dependencies often has more impact than asking the person to work faster.

Choose the engagement boundary

If you have frontend leadership, hiring a React engineer through augmentation may fit. If the application needs broader architecture and delivery ownership, consider a React development partnership.
